Procedure for testing if websites are working on the new server.

1. (If Pete hasn't already done this..) swap the ip or domain 'address' on the ftp account to 62.149.33.247 and upload attached file ustest.htm
/public_html
C:\Users\Peter\Documents\clients lite\

2. Open the 'hosts' file on your PC and instruct it to look on the Ultraspeed server for the domain.

Instructions:
1)  Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2)  Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator"
3)  Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt
4)  Click File -> Open
5)  Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc"
6)  Change the file filter drop down box from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to "All Files (*.*)"
7)  Select "hosts" and click "Open"
8)  Make the needed changes** and close Notepad.  Save when prompted.

IMPORTANT: I found it only worked when I followed 8 exactly i.e. close then save when prompted.

Your hosts file should look like this....

some bits at the top of the etc etc then

3. Restart your browser and go to www.thedomain/ustest.htm
If you see the file you are looking on the site on the new server. Check its ok.

If you get a 404 you are still looking at the live server.


4. Test Contact Form

Subject; Transferring domain to a new web server

Hello 

I hope you are well.

We are planning the transfer of your website to a new web server. This is a test email from a test copy of the website. Please let me know if you receive it.


Following the transfer there may some patchy interruption to incoming email that may last 24 to 48 hours. 

For this reason we think it best to transfer the live website this Friday evening.

If this is a problem please let me know and we can arrange to do it at a more convenient time.

I apologise for any inconvenience.
